Sharpie x Brian Anderson "The World is Your Canvas"

"The World is Your Canvas" is a Sharpie film featuring Brian Anderson, directed by Rick Wayne. At 1:08 it is the longest of Wayne's Sharpie documentary pieces, and the extra runtime is the point: this is a portrait rather than a spot.

The line the film is built on states Sharpie's oldest and most defensible idea. The brand's cultural position has never depended on the ink. It depends on where the marker turns up: athletes signing autographs, artists working on canvas, kids drawing on lunch bags. A Sharpie has always meant more than utility. "The World is Your Canvas" takes that observation and refuses to keep it metaphorical.

Wayne made a set of films for Sharpie in this period that approach the same territory from different angles. The Creative Marker anthem states the position at volume. The S-Gel profile films, on Alexis Ohanian and Morgan DeBaun, attach it to founders. Rookie of the Year attaches it to the ritual of the first professional signature and grows into a three year platform. This film attaches it to a single artist and gives him more room than any of the others got.

Length is a decision about respect in documentary. A minute and eight seconds for a portrait is short by any nonfiction standard, but against thirty second companions in the same series it is a deliberate allocation, and it means the film is allowed to let the subject finish a thought.

That suits how Wayne describes his own practice. He has said that brand and humanity are not opposites and that the most commercial work he has made is also the most human, and that he does not regard this as a coincidence. He has also said that actors are a craft and that real human emotion is a superpower, which is the sentence that explains why the Sharpie work keeps ending up in documentary form.
