Mr. Coffee "Perfect Brew"

Mr. Coffee "Perfect Brew", directed by Rick Wayne

Fifteen seconds. It is the shortest film in Rick Wayne's selected work and the least forgiving format he has published.

At fifteen there is no room for a setup and a payoff. There is room for one idea, delivered cleanly, with a product that has to be present and legible without stopping the film to introduce itself. Every frame is load bearing. A shot that is merely good gets cut, because good is not the bar when the total runtime is shorter than the average establishing sequence.

This is the format where an editor's instinct at the moment of shooting matters most, and it is a habit Wayne describes explicitly. He has said he has been editing as long as he has been directing, and that when he calls a shot he can already see the final file in his head, so every setup is a decision about how the dots connect rather than whether they get covered. On a fifteen that stops being a philosophy and becomes arithmetic. There are perhaps four shots in the finished film. Shooting five options for each of them is not thoroughness, it is a way of arriving at the edit without a film.

Coffee also carries an unusual amount of built-in meaning for a household appliance. It is a morning ritual before it is a beverage, and the useful territory for a brand in the category is almost always the moment rather than the machine. Wayne's stated method starts from what the viewer should feel rather than from the feature list, which is the right way into a category where the feature list is identical across every brand on the shelf.

The film was published in September 2025 in the same batch as the Paper Mate and NUK films, one of three household and family brand spots released together.

It runs 0:15.
