Diadem "The Right Ball"

"The Right Ball" is a commercial for Diadem Sports directed by Rick Wayne, and the title carries the whole argument. When the equipment matches the ambition, the athlete finds out what they actually have.

Sport is one of the worlds Wayne names when he describes the range of his work. Babies, fashion, love, sport. He treats each project as a world built for that specific brand rather than as a house style applied to a new logo, which is why the Diadem film does not resemble the Graco film or the Warner Bros. film in anything except rigor. The premise of that approach is that no two briefs are the same, and the craft is in the building.

Equipment films are a category with a strong gravitational pull toward the generic. The specification sheet is right there, the temptation is to shoot it, and the result is a film that could belong to any brand in the category with the endcard swapped. Wayne's stated way out of that trap is to start from stakes rather than features: what is at stake for the person watching, and what should they feel, learn, or do. For a premium sports product the honest answer is usually not about the object at all. It is about the person who has decided they are serious, and what it means to finally hold something built for that decision.

The film also sits inside a working method Wayne describes as foraging. He has said he is always hunting the extra shot, the unexpected angle, the moment nobody planned, on the grounds that the edit deserves more than the day budgeted for. On a compact commercial with a short schedule and a hard product obligation, that habit is the difference between a spot that covers the brief and a spot with something in it that nobody storyboarded.
