Android "Spaceman"

Android "Spaceman", directed by Rick Wayne

"Spaceman" is an Android film directed by Rick Wayne for Android and Google, running twenty three seconds.

Android occupies an unusual position for a brand film. It is not a single product with a single manufacturer, and its identity has always been built around what people do with it rather than around a spec sheet or an industrial design language. That pushes the work toward character and situation, which is a more interesting place for a director to be than a hardware beauty pass, and it explains why the brand's best films tend to be short, strange and specific rather than sweeping.

Twenty three seconds is a compression problem. There is one idea in a film this length and the craft is in landing it without preamble. Wayne has described his relationship to the edit as continuous with his directing, saying he has been cutting as long as he has been directing and that when he calls a shot he already sees the finished file. A short like this is where that habit either shows or does not. The difference is visible in whether the film feels compressed or merely brief.

March 2020 is also a marker in the timeline. The film was published the week the industry stopped, and it sits at the end of Wayne's Los Angeles run, four years before the Sharpie and Warner Bros. work that defines the current chapter. Google is the largest technology client in the selected work, alongside Intel.

Wayne's own account of what he builds for is deliberately broad: babies, fashion, love, sport, each project a different world constructed for that brand. A twenty three second Android film and a sixty five second Graco film about the first year of parenthood have almost nothing in common on the surface, which is the point of working that way.

The film runs 0:23.
